About Rivian
Rivian is the rare electric-vehicle startup that made it out of the PowerPoint stage and onto the trail. Founded in 2009 by RJ Scaringe, who spent years quietly refining the idea, it emerged in 2018 with a pickup and an SUV that promised to do for outdoor adventure what Tesla had done for luxury sedans. The pitch was irresistible to a certain kind of buyer: electric power, serious off-road ability, clever storage for camping gear and a friendly, oval-eyed face that looked nothing like a typical truck. Big backers, including Amazon and, for a time, Ford, lined up behind it.
Its 2021 stock-market debut was one of the largest in American history, and the R1T pickup reached customers that year, ahead of electric trucks from Ford and GM. The road since has been bumpy: production struggles at its factory in Normal, Illinois, a former Mitsubishi plant; heavy losses; several rounds of layoffs; and a costly recall or two. But the R1T and R1S won strong reviews, and the electric delivery vans Rivian builds for Amazon, and now sells to other fleets, have become a quiet backbone of the business.
A partnership with Volkswagen Group, announced in 2024, brought billions in investment in exchange for Rivian's software and electrical architecture, giving the company a lifeline and a powerful ally. The smaller, cheaper R2 SUV, built in Normal, has quickly become Rivian's best-selling model, and the even smaller R3 and the rally-flavored R3X are waiting in the wings. A second factory in Georgia is meant to support future growth, while Rivian's Adventure Network of chargers and its autonomy and AI efforts round out the strategy.
The news here follows the company from every angle: new models and updates, reviews, recalls, quarterly deliveries and earnings, the Volkswagen joint venture, factory and funding news, software features and the occasional bit of whimsy, such as its elaborate Halloween light shows. Expect plenty of comparisons with Tesla and the legacy automakers, owner stories from trails and campsites, and the analyst debates over whether Rivian can finally turn a reliable profit.
