About R1T
The Rivian R1T was the first modern electric pickup to reach American customers, arriving in September 2021, months ahead of the Ford F-150 Lightning and the GMC Hummer EV. It did not look like a traditional truck: compact by full-size standards, with a sleek body, distinctive oval headlights and a bed that was more lifestyle than workhorse. But it delivered a combination of performance, off-road ability and clever packaging that made critics take notice, and it quickly became a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts, especially in the mountain West.
The R1T's signature features include a gear tunnel that runs across the truck behind the cab, perfect for skis, golf clubs or wet hiking boots, and an optional camp kitchen that slides out of it. Its quad-motor version gave each wheel its own electric motor for precise torque control off-road, and air suspension lets it raise itself for rough trails or lower itself for efficient highway cruising. Early trucks had software glitches and service challenges, but a second-generation update brought a new electrical architecture, improved efficiency, new motors and better cameras.
The R1T competes with the Ford F-150 Lightning, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Tesla Cybertruck and Hummer EV pickup, but its smaller size and premium price put it in a niche of its own. It is more expensive than many buyers expect, and its towing range, as with all electric trucks, drops sharply under a heavy load. Still, it has earned a loyal following among drivers who want a truck that is as capable on a trail as it is comfortable on a highway, and it remains Rivian's halo product.
The coverage here includes reviews, off-road tests, software updates, recall notices, pricing changes and owner stories, from Rubicon Trail runs to cross-country road trips. Expect news on new trims and special editions, autonomy features and the warranty and service questions that come up as early trucks age. Followers of the brand will also find the playful side, from custom builds to holiday light shows, that has helped make the R1T a cult object rather than just a truck.
