About Tacoma

The Tacoma has been the king of midsize pickups in America for most of its life, a truck that resells for almost as much as it cost and has outlasted waves of rivals. It replaced the plain Toyota Pickup in 1995, inheriting a reputation for toughness that the old truck had earned the hard way, and it quickly became the default choice for anyone who wanted a pickup that was easier to park than a full-size and would never let them down.

The second and third generations leaned into off-road credibility with TRD trims, while critics noted cramped seating positions and dated powertrains. The fourth generation, launched for 2024 on the TNGA-F platform, dropped the V6 for a turbocharged four-cylinder and added the i-Force Max hybrid. It also offers the long-travel Trailhunter and TRD Pro models, a manual transmission on some versions, and a more modern cabin. Early models drew recalls, and some owners questioned fuel economy and ride.

The Tacoma is built in San Antonio, Texas, and in Mexico, and battles the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Nissan Frontier, Jeep Gladiator and Honda Ridgeline. Newer rivals such as the Ford Maverick and electric pickups have changed the conversation around small trucks. Expect news on trims and pricing, recalls, towing and off-road tests, aftermarket and SEMA builds, sales figures and the Tacoma's long-running duel with the resurgent Ranger.
