About Fortuner

Few vehicles carry as much road presence per rupee, baht or rand as the Toyota Fortuner. Launched in 2005 on the same IMV platform as the Hilux pickup and Innova people carrier, it is a body-on-frame, seven-seat SUV built for roads that are not always roads. In India it became a symbol of arrival, favored by politicians, business owners and anyone who wants to be noticed pulling up; across Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America it is a workhorse that happens to look imposing.

The second generation, introduced in 2015, brought sharper styling and refined diesels, and the Legender variant in India added a more aggressive, upmarket look. Owners praise its toughness, high seating position and diesel torque; critics note a firm, truck-like ride, a cramped third row and a price that has crept upward. It is built in several countries, including India, Thailand, Indonesia and South Africa, and it is not sold in North America.

Its rivals include the Mahindra Scorpio-N and XUV700, the MG Gloster, the Ford Everest, the Isuzu MU-X and the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. Reports of a substantial update to the Fortuner have circulated widely, with new new styling, technology and electrified powertrains expected to follow the latest Hilux. Expect news on that update, regional prices and discounts, sales figures, recalls, and the occasional viral story about a Fortuner won, gifted or flaunted.

Toyota's tough seven-seat SUV on Hilux bones, a status symbol across India and a workhorse of Southeast Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
