About Land Cruiser

If the Land Cruiser has a natural habitat, it is anywhere roads end. Born in 1951 as a military-style utility vehicle, it became the vehicle of choice for aid agencies, mining companies, Australian outback stations and Middle Eastern royalty. The FJ40 of the 1960s and 1970s is now a collector's prize, and the heavy-duty 70 Series has stayed in production for decades in some markets because nothing else does its job as well.

In America the Land Cruiser drifted upmarket for years, becoming a costly, plush V8 SUV that sold in small numbers before Toyota pulled it after 2021. It returned for 2024 in a new form, based on the 250 Series known elsewhere as the Prado: smaller, boxier, deliberately retro, with round headlights available and the i-Force Max hybrid as its launch powertrain. Outside North America, the big 300 Series remains the flagship, and a smaller Land Cruiser FJ broadens the family further.

The current Land Cruiser competes with the Land Rover Defender, Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee, Lexus GX and its own 4Runner cousin. Owners love its capability and character; critics note its thirst and price. Recent news has included a large recall for a fuel-line issue, accessory and lighting updates, snow-crawling concepts and special editions. This page covers it all, from new-model reviews and regional launches to recalls, collector auctions and the endless debate over which Land Cruiser is the real one.

Land Cruiser

Seventy-five years of going everywhere: the Toyota that crosses deserts and war zones, now a retro-styled hybrid in America and a 300 Series flagship abroad.
