The Corolla Cross takes the most famous name in Toyota's catalog and does the obvious thing with it, lifting it into a small crossover that fits between the C-HR and RAV4. Launched in Thailand in 2020 and in the United States for 2022, it was built for buyers who want the Corolla's frugality and dependability with a higher seat, more cargo room and available all-wheel drive. It is not trying to thrill anyone. It is trying to be the sensible choice, and it usually succeeds.

Early American versions drew criticism for a gruff, slow gasoline engine. The hybrid, added later, transformed the car with better acceleration, standard all-wheel drive and strong fuel economy, and a recent refresh sharpened the styling and cabin technology. For the U.S. market the Corolla Cross is built in Huntsville, Alabama, at the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant it shares with the Mazda CX-50, while other markets source it from Asia, South America and elsewhere.
