About Sequoia

The Sequoia is Toyota's answer to a question Detroit has long owned: what do you drive when you need eight seats and a big trailer behind them? Introduced for 2001 on the Tundra pickup's chassis, it has always been a full-size, body-on-frame SUV built for large families, boat owners and anyone who considers a minivan an admission of defeat. It has also always lived in the shadow of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition, which sell in far larger numbers.

The first two generations relied on V8 power and Toyota durability. The third generation, launched for 2023 and built in San Antonio alongside the Tundra, made a bold switch to a twin-turbocharged V6 hybrid as the only powertrain, delivering strong torque and towing with better fuel economy than the old V8. Critics pointed out that the third row sits high and the cargo area is shallow because of the battery placement, a compromise rivals do not ask buyers to make.

Trims range from family-friendly SR5 to the plush Capstone and the off-road TRD Pro, with newer off-road upgrades broadening its appeal to adventurers. The Sequoia shares engine-related scrutiny with the Tundra, whose twin-turbo V6 has faced recalls. It competes with the Tahoe, Suburban, Expedition, Jeep Wagoneer, Nissan Armada and GMC Yukon. Follow model-year changes, towing tests, recalls, reviews and concept builds here, along with how the hybrid-only gamble is playing with big-SUV buyers.

Sequoia

Toyota's full-size SUV, built on Tundra bones in Texas with a standard hybrid V6 and seating for eight, aimed squarely at the Tahoe and Expedition.
