About Honda

Honda is, at heart, an engine company that happens to build cars, motorcycles, lawn mowers, outboard motors and even business jets. Soichiro Honda, a self-taught mechanic, founded it in 1948, and its motorcycles conquered the world before the first Honda cars appeared in 1963. That engineering obsession has shaped everything since, from the high-revving VTEC engines enthusiasts adore to Formula One championships and the clever packaging that makes small Hondas feel roomy inside.

The Civic's CVCC engine met tough American emissions rules in the 1970s without a catalytic converter, an engineering coup that put Honda on the map. In 1982 it became the first Japanese company to build cars in the United States, assembling Accords in Marysville, Ohio, and in 1986 it launched Acura, the first Japanese luxury brand. The NSX supercar, the S2000 roadster and the Civic Type R built an enthusiast following that still shapes how people see the badge, even if most buyers simply want a dependable CR-V.

Recent years have been turbulent. Merger talks with Nissan collapsed in 2025, and Honda has retreated from parts of its electric plans: the Sony joint venture's Afeela sedan was cancelled before deliveries, and the GM-built Prologue is ending. Meanwhile hybrids have surged, the Prelude has returned as a hybrid coupe, and Honda Racing Corporation has pushed into off-road and performance parts. Tariffs, chip shortages and its large North American factory network are constant themes.

This section follows all of it: new models and refreshes from the Civic to the India-built Elevate, recalls and reliability, hybrid and electric strategy, the 0 Series concepts and kei-car EVs, motorsport, factory investments, quarterly earnings and the ever-present rivalry with Toyota. The questions worth watching are whether Honda's hybrid-first pivot pays off while rivals chase batteries, how its Ohio, Indiana, Alabama and Ontario plants weather trade fights, and whether the company finds a new partner after the Nissan talks fell apart.

Honda

The engine company that builds cars: Civic, Accord and CR-V by the million, Type R heroes, a hybrid push and a bumpy road toward electric power.

Inside Honda

Civic Fifty-plus years of the car that taught America small could be good: frugal commuter, tuner icon, efficient hybrid and the track-devouring Type R.
Accord The midsize Honda that became the first Japanese car built in America, a perennial best-seller and favorite, now refined and mostly hybrid.
City Honda's subcompact sedan for India and Southeast Asia, sensible and efficient with a hybrid option, whose name began on a quirky 1980s hatchback.
Prelude Honda's stylish sport coupe is back, a hybrid this time with simulated gearshifts and Type R hardware, reviving a name that pioneered four-wheel steering.
Afeela Sony and Honda's high-tech electric sedan, shown at CES and priced near $90,000, then cancelled before customer deliveries as the venture scaled back.
CR-V Honda's best-selling vehicle, the roomy compact crossover families trust, now offered as a strong hybrid and even a plug-in hydrogen fuel-cell version.
HR-V Honda's small crossover, a Civic-based runabout in North America and a clever Fit-derived hybrid called Vezel in Japan, two cars sharing one name.
ZR-V Honda's Civic-based compact crossover for Europe, Japan and Australia, hybrid and sharp to drive, the same car Americans buy under the HR-V badge.
Pilot Honda's three-row family SUV, V6-powered and Alabama-built, with a TrailSport for the dirt roads and enough cupholders to stock a stadium.
Passport Honda's two-row adventure SUV, reborn tougher and boxier with a V6 and TrailSport gear, and the base of a 1,300-hp HRC desert trophy truck.
Elevate Honda's India-built midsize SUV, a roomy, petrol-only rival to the Creta and Seltos, exported to Japan as the WR-V and now freshly facelifted.
Prologue Honda's first mainstream electric SUV, built by GM on Ultium bones in Mexico, a surprise sales success whose run Honda has since confirmed is ending.
Ridgeline Honda's unibody pickup with a trunk in its bed and a tailgate that swings two ways, a truck for people who rarely need a truck, now hinting at a hybrid future.
Odyssey The minivan Honda built for America, roomy and refined with Magic Slide seats and a built-in vacuum, still dueling the Sienna for the school run.
