About Frontier
The Frontier is the latest chapter in a long line of small Nissan and Datsun pickups that made the brand's name in America, from the Datsun trucks of the 1960s and 1970s to the beloved Hardbody of the late 1980s and 1990s. The Frontier name arrived for the 1998 model year, and the truck has always pitched itself as a tough, no-nonsense alternative to the Toyota Tacoma for buyers who want a reliable midsize pickup.
Its second generation stayed in production for an astonishing stretch, from 2005 until 2021, which made the Frontier a byword for old-school simplicity and a favorite of budget-minded buyers. The current third generation, launched for 2022, modernized the cabin and styling while keeping a strong, naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V6 and a nine-speed automatic as standard, at a time when rivals moved to turbo four-cylinders and hybrids. The Pro-4X adds off-road hardware and a dose of attitude.
It competes with the Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Ford Ranger, Jeep Gladiator and Honda Ridgeline. Abroad, the related Navara is sold in many markets, and the global midsize-pickup business keeps shifting as Nissan, Mitsubishi and Honda share platforms and new Chinese entrants arrive with hybrid power. This page follows Frontier pricing, special editions and partnerships such as a Forsberg Racing package, patents hinting at features like a midgate, reviews, recalls and buyers' guides to older engines. Any word on the next generation, including electrified versions, will land here too.
