If one car explains how Skoda went from punchline to benchmark, it is the Octavia. The name dates to the 1950s, but the modern car arrived in 1996 as the first all-new Skoda developed under Volkswagen ownership, built on Golf underpinnings yet notably bigger inside. It became the brand's best-seller almost immediately and has stayed there, a fixture of European family life and a car that taxi drivers, police forces and fleet managers buy in enormous numbers, because it simply never seems to wear out or run out of space.
The trick is the body. The Octavia is a liftback rather than a conventional sedan, so the huge rear hatch swallows luggage, and the estate version is roomier still, a genuine rival to cars a size up. Across four generations it has offered gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid power, and the vRS models, in both body styles, added a turbocharged dose of fun. Critics have occasionally found the cabin too sober and the touchscreen controls of the latest generation fiddly, while owners point to the running costs and shrug.
The current generation, refreshed in recent years, competes with the Volkswagen Golf, the Toyota Corolla, the Hyundai i30 and the Peugeot 308, and quietly undercuts most of them on space. It is sold across Europe, Australia and other markets, and Skoda's habit of keeping sedans and estates alive while others go all-in on SUVs gives it a loyal following.
