About Kodiaq

The Kodiaq takes its name from the Kodiak bear of Alaska, with the spelling bent to suit Skoda's naming habits, and the comparison fits: it is big, friendly and surprisingly agile. Launched in 2016 as the brand's first large SUV, it offered seven seats, a vast trunk and the usual Skoda gadgets in a body priced below most rivals. It quickly became one of the brand's most important cars and helped prove that a Skoda could command a premium price without losing its value-for-money reputation.

The second-generation Kodiaq arrived in 2023 with a cleaner design, an improved interior and a plug-in hybrid option, while the sporty vRS, called the RS in some markets, gives the family a quick, firm-riding flagship. Reviewers have praised its space, comfort and refinement; the latest model's switch of the gear selector to a stalk behind the steering wheel took a little getting used to, and some critics wish for more character. Owners tend to keep them for years, which says plenty.

It is sold across Europe, Australia and India, where a locally assembled Kodiaq serves as Skoda's flagship SUV and competes with the Toyota Fortuner, the Jeep Meridian and the MG Gloster. In Europe, rivals include the Hyundai Santa Fe, the Kia Sorento, the Nissan X-Trail and the Peugeot 5008. This page collects reviews and long-term tests, prices and offers, used-car advice, specification updates and recalls shared with its Volkswagen Group relatives.
