About Macan

The Macan is the Porsche that made the brand accessible to a much wider audience. Launched in 2014 on underpinnings related to the Audi Q5, it was a compact SUV that drove more like a hot hatchback than a family crossover, and it quickly became Porsche's best-selling model. For many buyers it was their first Porsche, and for the company it was a cash machine that expanded the crest's reach far beyond traditional sports car owners.

The original Macan was built with gasoline engines, from turbocharged four-cylinders to the potent GTS and Turbo, and it earned near-universal praise for its steering and agility. Its cabin aged faster than its chassis, and the rear seat and cargo area were always a bit tight. In 2024 Porsche replaced it with an all-electric Macan built on the PPE platform shared with the Audi Q6 e-tron, and the gasoline model was phased out, first in Europe because of new cybersecurity rules and later elsewhere.

The electric Macan drives impressively, but demand for EVs proved softer than Porsche hoped, and the company has announced a gasoline-powered SUV to sit alongside it, reportedly sharing its basic structure with the latest Audi Q5. Rivals include the BMW X3 and iX3, Mercedes GLC, Genesis GV70 and Audi's own Q5 and Q6 e-tron. The original gasoline Macan, meanwhile, has become a sought-after used buy for drivers who want the old car's sharp handling at a fraction of its new price. This page follows the Macan Electric, the coming combustion model, used-market stories, recalls and pricing.
