About X3
The X3 is the BMW that pays a lot of the bills. Introduced in 2003, it created the compact luxury SUV segment that now dominates premium sales, offering a high seating position without abandoning BMW's sporty driving character. It has grown with each generation, and today's X3 is about the size of the original X5, a reflection of how much buyers' expectations have changed in two decades, and of how thoroughly the SUV has replaced the sedan in suburban driveways.
The current generation, launched in 2024, brought sharper styling, a large curved display, a minimalist cabin and a range of turbocharged gasoline, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains, with the potent X3 M50 at the top, which has since received a power increase. It is built in Spartanburg, South Carolina, among other plants, which matters as tariffs reshape the industry. Reviewers praise its handling and refinement, and critics, as usual, complain about the grille and the dependence on touchscreens.
Its rivals include the Audi Q5, Mercedes GLC, Lexus NX, Genesis GV70, Volvo XC60 and Porsche Macan. The electric iX3 is now a separate Neue Klasse model rather than a version of the X3, so the X3 can concentrate on combustion and hybrid buyers, a split that lets BMW hedge its bets while electric demand remains uneven. This page follows the X3 through launches, M50 news, reviews, recalls and its constant comparison tests with Stuttgart and Ingolstadt.
