About M2
The M2 is the BMW enthusiasts point to when someone claims the brand has forgotten how to build a fun car. The first generation, launched in 2016, took the compact 2 Series coupe, widened its fenders, added a turbocharged straight-six and sent power to the rear wheels, creating a pocket rocket that many critics called the best M car in years and the true spiritual heir to the original E30 M3.
The second generation, which arrived for the 2023 model year, uses the same S58 engine as the M3 and M4, offers a six-speed manual alongside the automatic, and wears a boxier, more aggressive body that divided opinion. It is heavier than its predecessor, a common complaint, but also much faster, and reviewers continue to praise its balance, its sound and its willingness to slide when asked. A hardcore M2 CS and other special editions have followed, keeping the model fresh for collectors and track-day regulars.
The M2 competes with the Porsche 718 Cayman, Toyota GR Supra, Ford Mustang Dark Horse, Nissan Z Nismo and Audi RS3, a mix of sports cars and hot hatches. As emissions rules tighten, a small rear-drive coupe with a big six-cylinder engine looks increasingly like an endangered species, which makes the M2 all the more cherished. Its stiff ride and modest rear seat do not trouble its fans in the slightest. This page follows its special editions, track tests, recalls and pricing.
