About Neue Klasse
The original Neue Klasse, or New Class, was the family of compact sedans that rescued BMW in 1962 and defined the sporty, rear-drive formula the brand has followed ever since. Reviving that name was a statement: BMW believes its new generation of electric cars is just as important. The modern Neue Klasse is a new electric platform, a new electrical and computing architecture and a new design language all at once.
The technical highlights include an 800-volt system with new cylindrical battery cells, faster charging and longer range, plus powerful central computers that control driving dynamics and infotainment. Inside, a panoramic display stretches along the base of the windshield, and the exterior design returns to a slimmer, more upright interpretation of the kidney grille, a welcome move for fans tired of oversized nostrils. The first model was the iX3 SUV, built at a new factory in Debrecen, Hungary, which has drawn strong order books, followed by the electric i3 sedan.
The Neue Klasse influence is spreading quickly, with its design language appearing on new gasoline models such as the 3 Series and X5, and more electric models promised, including a future electric M3. BMW expects the architecture to underpin a large share of its lineup within a few years, so its reception will shape the company's direction for a long time. Its rivals are the Tesla Model Y and Model 3, Mercedes's new electric GLC and CLA, and a wave of Chinese EVs. This page follows Neue Klasse launches, reviews, range and charging tests, production news and sales.
