About i4 and iX
The i4 and iX arrived together in 2021 as BMW's first serious electric cars since the original i3, and they took very different approaches. The i4 is essentially an electric version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, a sleek five-door liftback that looks like a regular BMW and drives like one, with the punchy i4 M50, later M60, at the top of the range. It became one of the best-selling luxury EVs in many markets because it asked buyers to change very little.
The iX was the radical one: a large electric SUV with a carbon-reinforced structure, a minimalist lounge-like cabin, crystal controls and a tall, blanked-off kidney grille that drew no shortage of ridicule. Underneath the controversy, critics found a quiet, comfortable, very quick vehicle with excellent range for its time, and an update added more power and range. Both cars predate BMW's Neue Klasse platform, using the earlier electric architecture, which makes their software and charging speeds look less advanced next to the newest BMWs.
The i4 competes with the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, Polestar 2 and Hyundai Ioniq 6; the iX faces the Mercedes EQE SUV, Cadillac Lyriq, Rivian R1S and Audi's large electric SUVs. With the Neue Klasse iX3, the new i3 and the electric iX5 arriving, both face competition from inside the family as well. This page follows the i4 and iX through updates, recalls, tests and their place in BMW's shifting electric lineup.
