About Land Rover
Land Rover began with a sketch in the sand. Rover's chief engineer Maurice Wilks, who used a war-surplus Jeep on his farm in Anglesey, is said to have drawn the outline of a utilitarian four-by-four on a beach, and the Series I that followed in 1948 became one of the most widely traveled vehicles ever built. Bodied in aluminum because steel was rationed, it was intended as a stopgap. Instead it founded a dynasty that now stretches from muddy farm gates to the valet stands of Mayfair and Beverly Hills.
The Range Rover of 1970 invented the luxury SUV before anyone had a name for it, the Discovery of 1989 brought the brand to families, and the Freelander of 1997 took it into the compact class. The original utility model became the Defender in 1990 and soldiered on until 2016. Ownership passed from British Leyland through British Aerospace, BMW and Ford to India's Tata Motors in 2008, and under Tata, Jaguar Land Rover enjoyed its greatest commercial success, even as reliability surveys handed critics and comedians plenty of material.
JLR has since reorganized itself around what it calls houses of brands. Range Rover, Defender and Discovery now stand largely on their own, with the Land Rover name serving as a seal of authenticity rather than the headline on the grille. Electric versions of the core models are rolling out, starting with the Range Rover Sport, while a crippling cyberattack in 2025 halted the company's British factories for weeks. In China, the Freelander name has been revived for a separate electrified brand built with Chery, and India has become a growing assembly base.
Expect a steady stream of recalls, which have been frequent and sometimes very large, alongside reveals of new body styles, first drives of the electric models, local assembly deals, price changes and quarterly results from JLR and Tata Motors. There is also a rich seam of heritage, from Series restorations to expedition stories, because few brands have as many devoted owners who measure a vehicle's worth by how far from a paved road it has been.
