About Semi

The Tesla Semi is the company's bid to electrify the backbone of the economy: the heavy truck. Unveiled in 2017 with bold claims about range, efficiency and operating costs, it promised to change long-haul trucking by replacing diesel engines with battery power. The first deliveries came in December 2022, to PepsiCo, years later than originally promised. Since then the Semi has been tested by fleets on regional routes, where its range and quick charging have drawn attention.

The Semi's design breaks with trucking tradition. The driver sits in the center of the cab, flanked by screens, and the truck uses multiple electric motors for strong acceleration even when fully loaded. It charges at Megachargers, high-power stations designed specifically for heavy trucks. Fleet operators have reported encouraging efficiency numbers, while skeptics question the cost, weight and infrastructure needed to make battery-electric heavy trucks work at scale. Like other electric trucks, it has faced scrutiny over battery fire risks.

The Semi competes with electric trucks from established manufacturers, including Freightliner's eCascadia, Volvo's VNR Electric and models from Chinese makers, as well as hydrogen fuel-cell trucks. Tesla has built a dedicated factory near its Nevada Gigafactory for volume production, and truck-stop operators have begun opening Megachargers beyond California. Its success will depend on whether it can deliver on cost, range and reliability for fleets that live on thin margins and measure everything in cents per mile, and whether a charging network for heavy trucks can grow fast enough to support long-haul routes.

The coverage here includes fleet deployments, Megacharger openings, production news, safety incidents, regulatory developments and comparisons with diesel and hydrogen trucks. Expect stories about real-world efficiency, freight operators' experiences with charging stops and payload limits, and the broader question of how quickly the trucking industry can move away from diesel. Emissions rules in California and other states, and federal policy on clean trucks, will shape that answer as much as the hardware does, which makes the Semi as much a policy story as an engineering one.
