About Model Y
The Tesla Model Y is the most commercially important electric vehicle ever built. A crossover version of the Model 3, sharing much of its engineering, it began deliveries in 2020 and quickly became Tesla's best seller. In 2023 it was the best-selling vehicle in the world, gas or electric, a remarkable feat for a car that did not exist a few years earlier. It took the Model 3's formula of range, performance and Supercharger access and wrapped it in the high-riding, practical body that buyers in nearly every market now prefer.
The Model Y's strengths are its spacious, versatile interior, its efficiency and its quick acceleration, and it has been praised for its cargo space and low running costs. Its weaknesses, especially in early years, included a firm ride, road noise and inconsistent build quality. A major refresh, launched in 2025, brought a new front end with a full-width light bar, a quieter and more comfortable cabin, ventilated seats and a rear touchscreen. Tesla later added a cheaper Standard version and, in China, the Model Y L, a longer six-seat variant aimed at families.
The Model Y is built in Fremont, California, Austin, Texas, Shanghai and Berlin, making it one of the most widely produced vehicles in the world. It competes with an expanding field of electric crossovers, including the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Volkswagen ID.4, BYD's growing lineup and the Xiaomi YU7. Its market share has come under pressure as rivals multiply, and Tesla has responded with price cuts, financing deals and new trims.
The coverage here includes reviews, price changes, software and Full Self-Driving updates, recall notices, sales results, safety and efficiency ratings, and the factory and trade decisions that shape where Model Ys are built and sold. Expect comparisons with newer rivals, long-term ownership reports and the Model Y's growing role as a test platform for Tesla's Robotaxi service, which turns the family crossover into a driverless taxi in a few American cities.
