About RS and R8

RS stands for RennSport, racing sport, and it marks the Audis built for drivers who think the regular S models are a little polite. The line began in 1994 with the RS2 Avant, a wagon developed with Porsche that could embarrass sports cars, and it established the formula that still defines Audi Sport: practical body styles, quattro traction and an outrageous amount of power. The RS6 Avant, in particular, has become a cult object, a wagon for families who prefer to arrive early.

The R8 was the halo above them all. Launched in 2006 with styling inspired by the Le Mans Quattro concept and a mid-mounted V8, later a howling V10 shared with the Lamborghini Huracan, it was a supercar you could drive every day, and it became a pop-culture star as Tony Stark's car in the Iron Man films. Production ended in 2024, with no direct replacement, and enthusiasts have been mourning that naturally aspirated V10 ever since.

Today the RS range includes the five-cylinder RS3, the RS Q8 SUV, the RS6 and the electric RS e-tron GT, with a new RS5 adding a fresh chapter. Audi has previewed a future electric sports car, shown as the Concept C, that will reportedly share its platform with Porsche's electric 718. This page follows RS launches, R8 auctions and history, track tests and the debate over whether electric power can carry the spirit forward.
