About A6 and A7

The A6 is Audi's business-class car, the one you might find carrying a lawyer down the Autobahn at a smooth, discreet 130 mph. Born in 1994 as the successor to the Audi 100, it has always competed directly with the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class, usually winning on cabin design and all-weather confidence and losing a little on driving flair. In Europe the Avant wagon is the version people love; in North America the sedan and the rugged, raised allroad carry the flag.

The A7 arrived in 2010 as a sleeker take on the same idea, a four-door coupe with a liftback tailgate that made the A6 look a touch sensible. Together they gave rise to the S and RS versions, including the ferocious RS6 Avant and RS7, family cars with supercar pace. In its latest generation, Audi split the A6 name into two cars: a combustion A6 on a new platform and the electric A6 e-tron, a slippery, long-range EV built on the architecture shared with Porsche.

That split, plus Audi's naming reversals, makes the family harder to follow than it used to be, and the A7's future role has been less clear as the new A6 range took over. A next-generation A6 allroad has also been revealed, keeping the raised-wagon tradition alive for buyers who want ground clearance without an SUV. Reviewers have generally liked the new combustion A6 for its comfort, while noting that the options list can push its price uncomfortably high. This page covers the combustion and electric A6, the A7, the allroad and the performance versions, with reviews, tests, recalls and pricing.
