About MG4
The MG4 did something established European brands had promised for years and struggled to deliver: an electric family hatchback that ordinary buyers could afford. Launched in 2022 on SAIC's new Modular Scalable Platform, it arrived with a slim underfloor battery, rear-wheel drive, sharp styling and a price that undercut the Volkswagen ID.3 by a wide margin. Testers were surprised to find it was not merely cheap but genuinely good to drive, with balanced, playful handling that hinted at MG's sporting heritage.
Versions range from entry models with smaller batteries to long-range variants and the twin-motor XPower, which makes more than 400 horsepower and accelerates like a sports car, if without quite the chassis to match. Critics have pointed to a cheap-feeling interior, fiddly touchscreen controls and patchy software, while owners tend to forgive a great deal in exchange for low running costs and a long warranty. The MG4 quickly became one of Europe's best-selling EVs and a fixture of lease and company-car deals in Britain.
Its success put MG squarely in the crosshairs of the European Union's tariffs on Chinese-built EVs, which hit SAIC especially hard and forced price rethinks across the region. The MG4 name has since been stretched to a separate, more conventional front-drive model sold in some markets as the MG4 Urban, and versions with semi-solid-state batteries have appeared in China. Rivals include the Volkswagen ID.3, the BYD Dolphin, the Renault Megane E-Tech, the Kia EV3 and a growing crowd of affordable Chinese hatchbacks.
Stories about the MG4 tend to cover lease deals and price cuts, long-term reviews, comparison tests, software updates, recalls and the fortunes of the wider MG range in Europe. It is also a bellwether for the affordable EV, a segment where European brands are finally fielding competitors, and for the trade policies that decide whether a car built in China can still undercut them once it reaches a European showroom.
