About Cyberster

MG built its reputation on small, affordable open sports cars, so it was fitting that its centenary era produced the Cyberster. Shown in production form in 2023 and on sale from 2024, it is a two-seat electric roadster with a power-folding fabric roof and dramatic scissor doors that rise at the touch of a button, styled in London with a long hood and a sharp, cut-off tail. It was the first new MG sports car since the little MG TF bowed out more than a decade earlier.

Two versions have been offered: a single-motor, rear-drive car and a dual-motor model with roughly 500 horsepower that can reach 60 mph in around three seconds. Reviewers have praised its looks, its straight-line pace and its comfort as a grand tourer, while questioning its considerable weight, its lack of the delicate involvement of a Mazda MX-5 and a wraparound screen layout partly hidden behind the steering wheel. It is less a featherweight sports car than a stylish, fast open-top cruiser.

The Cyberster has been sold in Britain, Europe, Australia and parts of Asia, and in India it became a halo model for MG Select, JSW MG Motor's premium retail channel, alongside the M9 electric luxury MPV, with special Couture editions following. Its rivals are an odd mix, from the Porsche 718 Boxster and BMW Z4 to the MX-5, because very few manufacturers build electric roadsters at all. Its existence matters less for volume than for image, signaling that MG still values the fun part of its history.

Stories here follow its launches and pricing in new markets, special editions, reviews and long-term tests, and the debate over whether an electric roadster can deliver the joy of the classic MGs. The Cyberster also shows how SAIC uses the MG badge, sometimes as a budget brand and sometimes as an aspirational one, and how a car like this can lend a little sparkle to a showroom full of sensible SUVs.
