About MG HS
The HS is the car that made MG a serious player rather than a curiosity. Launched in 2018 as a midsize family SUV, it offered the space and equipment of a Nissan Qashqai or Hyundai Tucson for noticeably less money, wrapped in sharp styling and backed by a long warranty. It quickly became one of MG's best sellers in Britain, Australia and the Middle East, and it taught a skeptical public that a Chinese-built MG could be a perfectly sensible purchase for a growing family.
The first generation earned praise for its cabin quality and value but criticism for a thirsty turbocharged engine, a hesitant dual-clutch gearbox and unremarkable handling. A plug-in hybrid version broadened its appeal to company-car drivers looking to cut their tax bills. The second generation, launched in 2024, grew in size, gained a cleaner and more modern interior with a pair of large screens and added a full hybrid, branded Hybrid+, alongside gasoline and plug-in versions.
The HS lines up against the Qashqai, Tucson, Kia Sportage, Toyota RAV4 and a growing crowd of Chinese rivals from BYD, Chery and others. It is built in China, with local assembly in markets such as Pakistan, and it has become a backbone of MG's retail and fleet business in the Gulf. Bigger SUVs such as the seven-seat MG S9 now surround it, but the HS remains the brand's bread and butter in most of the places it is sold.
Coverage of the HS is steady rather than splashy: reviews and comparison tests, prices and trims in different markets, hybrid launches, fleet and dealer deals, recalls and long-term ownership reports. For shoppers, the important questions are how its hybrid systems compare with Toyota's and Hyundai's, how well it holds its value and how it measures up against the newer Chinese brands now chasing exactly the same family buyers with similar promises.
