About EX30
The EX30, revealed in 2023, is the smallest Volvo on sale and one of the most important. A compact electric SUV built on a platform from parent company Geely, shared with the Smart #1 and Zeekr X, it brought the brand's design and safety reputation to a much lower price point and introduced Volvo to younger, city-dwelling buyers. In its twin-motor Performance form it is also the quickest-accelerating Volvo ever, a surprising title for a car this compact.
The EX30's minimalist cabin, with a single central touchscreen and controls moved into the display, has divided opinion: some love the clean, Scandinavian design and recycled materials, while others find it fiddly and have criticized software glitches. Production started in China, and Volvo added assembly in Ghent, Belgium, partly in response to tariffs. A rugged Cross Country version followed, and even a cargo-van version has appeared. It was a strong seller in Europe after launch, though competition has grown fiercer.
The EX30 competes with the Mini Aceman, Smart #1, Kia EV3, Jeep Avenger, Hyundai Kona Electric, BYD Atto 3 and Alfa Romeo Junior. Volvo has added new entry-level trims in markets such as India. Coverage includes reviews, software updates, recalls, pricing, sales and new variants, and news of further small electric Volvos. The EX30 has become a test case for whether a premium brand can build an affordable EV without diluting what makes it premium, and whether a cabin with almost no buttons is the future or a fad. Its sales, and the feedback from owners, are being watched closely across the industry.
