About Speed 400 and Scrambler
The Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X may be the most important Triumphs in decades, not because they are the fastest but because they made the brand accessible to millions. Launched in 2023 and built by partner Bajaj Auto in India, these 400-class single-cylinder bikes combined modern retro styling, a lively engine and quality finishes at prices that undercut many rivals, especially in India. They changed what Triumph ownership looked like almost overnight.
The Speed 400 is a roadster with Bonneville-inspired looks, while the Scrambler 400 X adds longer-travel suspension, a larger front wheel and a more upright riding position for rough roads. They were praised for performance, refinement and value, with critics mainly pointing to vibration and some cost-cutting details. The more affordable Speed T4 followed, along with more rugged Scrambler variants and smaller-displacement versions shaped by India's tax rules on engine size.
These bikes compete directly with Royal Enfield's Hunter 350 and Classic 350, the Harley-Davidson X440, Honda's CB350 line, Jawa and Yezdi models and the KTM 390 Duke. They are also exported from India to many other markets, giving riders worldwide a lower-cost entry into the Triumph family and helping drive record sales for the brand. This page collects launches, price changes, sales figures, road tests, comparisons and recalls for Triumph's small singles.
