About EV3 and EV5
The EV3 and EV5 are Kia's compact electric SUVs, designed to bring the brand's electric technology to a wider audience at more accessible prices than the EV6 and EV9. The EV3 is a small crossover with a boxy, futuristic design and impressive range for its size, while the EV5 is a larger, more family-oriented SUV that competes in the heart of the compact segment. Both share the squared-off styling and distinctive lighting that have become the hallmark of Kia's electric lineup.
The EV5 was revealed in 2023 and went on sale first in China, where it is built for many export markets, and then in Korea, Australia and elsewhere. The EV3 followed in 2024, launching in Korea and Europe, and was named World Car of the Year in 2025. Both use 400-volt electrical systems rather than the 800-volt hardware of the EV6 and EV9, a choice that helps keep costs down. Kia has since added GT performance versions of both models in Europe, and the EV3 has also reached North America.
The EV3 competes with the Volvo EX30, Jeep Avenger, Smart #1, Hyundai Kona Electric and other small electric crossovers, while the EV5 faces the Tesla Model Y, Volkswagen ID.4, Skoda Enyaq, Toyota bZ and BYD Atto 3. Their strengths include space, range, technology and design; critics have noted that their charging speeds lag behind Kia's 800-volt models and that prices in some markets are higher than expected for their segments.
