About Ioniq 5
The Ioniq 5 is the car that made Hyundai a serious player in electric vehicles. With its retro-futuristic styling, inspired by the original 1970s Hyundai Pony concept, and its pixel-pattern lighting, it looked like nothing else on the road when it launched in 2021. Underneath, it was just as impressive: built on the E-GMP platform, it offered 800-volt charging that could add hundreds of miles of range in minutes, a spacious, flat-floored interior and a smooth, quiet ride.
The Ioniq 5 won the World Car of the Year award in 2022 and has collected many other honors. In 2023, Hyundai introduced the Ioniq 5 N, a high-performance version with simulated gearshifts, synthesized engine noise and track-ready hardware that won over many skeptics of electric performance cars. US-market production moved to Hyundai's Metaplant in Georgia, and an update brought more range, a native North American Charging Standard port and an XRT trim with off-road styling.
The Ioniq 5 competes with the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Volkswagen ID.4, Kia EV6 and Toyota bZ. Its strengths include style, charging speed and space; critics have noted its range in cold weather and the absence of a rear wiper on early models. It has been one of the best-selling non-Tesla EVs in the United States, though sales have fluctuated with incentives and market demand, and it has been discontinued in some markets, such as India.

As Hyundai expands its electric lineup with smaller and larger models, look for stories about how the Ioniq 5 fits in, along with news about the next generation, which is expected to build on the original's bold design and will need to fend off a wave of cheaper rivals, including some from inside Hyundai's own showroom.
