About Tonale
The Tonale was Alfa Romeo's first electrified car and its attempt to win buyers in the busiest premium segment of all, the compact SUV. Named for the Tonale Pass in the Italian Alps, it arrived in 2022 after a long gestation, with a face that borrows the three-lobed grille and slim headlamps from Alfa's design history. It is the brand's entry point in the United States and an important volume model in Europe.
Underneath, the Tonale shares its platform with the Jeep Compass and the Dodge Hornet, which is built alongside it in Pomigliano d'Arco near Naples. Depending on market it comes as a mild hybrid with front-wheel drive or as a plug-in hybrid with an electric rear axle that gives it all-wheel drive and a useful electric-only range. Reviewers have praised the styling, the cabin and the sharp steering, while pointing out that the plug-in is heavy and that the Tonale costs more than its mechanical twin.
In Alfa's lineup the Tonale sits between the smaller Junior and the larger Stelvio. Its rivals are the BMW X1, Audi Q3, Mercedes GLA, Volvo XC40, Lexus UX and Mazda CX-30, plus the Hornet, which forces buyers to ask what the Alfa badge is worth to them. Expect news on model-year updates, special editions, recalls, pricing and sales, along with comparison tests against the Hornet and the German establishment. Changes to the hybrid lineup and the Tonale's place as Alfa's product plan evolves are the stories to follow.
