About Nio

Nio was founded in 2014 by William Li, an internet entrepreneur who had already built China's biggest car-buying website, and it set out to be something China did not yet have: a premium electric brand to rival BMW and Mercedes. Its first production car, the seven-seat ES8 SUV, reached customers in 2018, the same year the company listed in New York. A near-death cash crunch followed, and a rescue backed by the city of Hefei in 2020 kept the lights on. Nio has been fighting for profitability, and for respect, ever since.

Its signature idea is the battery swap. Instead of waiting at a charger, a Nio driver can pull into an automated station where robots exchange a depleted pack for a full one in a few minutes, and owners can even lease batteries rather than buy them. Critics have long called the network expensive to build and run; fans call it the best answer yet to charging anxiety. Rival carmakers have increasingly come around, with Geely investing in Nio's energy business and other brands signing on to share swap stations.

The family now spans three brands. Nio itself sells premium sedans and SUVs, from the ET5 and ET7 to the ES6, ES8 and flagship ES9 and ET9. Onvo, launched in 2024, targets mainstream families with SUVs priced against the Tesla Model Y, while Firefly is a small, upmarket hatchback aimed at city drivers in China and Europe. Nio's European expansion, through Norway, Germany, the Netherlands and Scandinavia, has been slow and costly, and partners and distributors now play a bigger role.

The company's fortunes swing with every monthly delivery report, and investors watch closely, because Nio has spent heavily for a decade and the market wants proof that scale and profit are finally within reach. Coverage tracks those figures alongside quarterly earnings, new model launches, swap-station partnerships with other carmakers, the founder's frank views on autonomous driving and whether customers will pay for it, market entries in places such as Australia and South Africa, recalls, reviews and the stock's frequent roller-coaster rides.
