About Onvo and Firefly

For most of its life Nio sold only expensive cars, and that was a problem in a market where prices kept falling. Its answer was to launch two new brands below the Nio badge. Onvo arrived in 2024 with the L60, a midsize electric SUV aimed squarely at the Tesla Model Y on price, space and efficiency, followed by the larger three-row L90 for big families. Firefly came next, a compact, upmarket hatchback with cheerful styling and a focus on city driving, pitched in China and abroad against the Mini, Smart and Volkswagen ID.3.

Both brands lean on Nio's engineering and, importantly, its battery-swap expertise, adapted to their smaller and cheaper packs. The early reaction has been mixed but encouraging: Onvo's cars won praise for cabin space and smart packaging while struggling at times to meet sales targets, and Firefly has been praised for maneuverability and a polished interior while critics questioned its range at launch. A later Firefly version with a larger battery aimed to answer that complaint without making the car bigger or heavier.

Firefly is a key part of Nio's overseas plan. It has been sold in European markets including the Netherlands, offered in right-hand drive for markets such as Britain and South Africa, and discussed for Brazil and Spain. Onvo has largely focused on China so far, where its rivals include the Xiaomi YU7, XPeng G6, Leapmotor's C-series and the vast BYD lineup, all fighting in the most price-sensitive part of the world's largest EV market. Firefly's European rivals range from the Mini Cooper Electric to the BYD Dolphin and Renault 5.

These are the brands that will decide whether Nio can reach real scale. Coverage follows launches and pricing, delivery numbers, new markets, limited editions, battery and range updates, recalls and reviews, plus the bigger debate over whether three brands strengthen Nio or stretch a company that is still chasing consistent profits. Onvo has to sell in volume to make the math work, and Firefly has to prove that a small Chinese premium car can find a following in cities where buyers have plenty of familiar choices.
