About Super Duty

When the job outgrows an F-150, Ford hands over the keys to the Super Duty. The F-250, F-350 and F-450 pickups, plus the chassis cabs that wear dump beds, ambulance bodies and utility boxes, are the trucks that pull fifth-wheel campers over mountain passes, tow horse trailers to rodeos and carry crews to oil fields. They share a name and a grille shape with the F-150, but underneath they are a different breed, with heavier frames, solid front axles on four-wheel-drive models and towing ratings that sound like freight-train specifications.

The Super Duty line split from the light-duty F-Series in the late 1990s, and the separation let Ford build each truck for its real customer. Its engine story is a soap opera of its own: the Power Stroke diesel has gone through famously good and notoriously troubled eras before settling into the current 6.7-liter, while the big 7.3-liter gas V8 nicknamed Godzilla won fans for its old-school simplicity, though some owners have raised complaints about camshaft wear. Interiors have climbed so far upmarket that a loaded Limited costs as much as a luxury SUV.

The heavy-duty pickup market is a three-way fistfight between the Super Duty, the Ram 2500 and 3500, and the Chevrolet Silverado HD and its GMC Sierra HD twin, and the brands trade towing-capacity claims like heavyweight champions trading belts. Off-road Tremor versions and lifted aftermarket builds have pulled the Super Duty into the lifestyle world too. Big as these trucks are, they are not immune to recalls, and gauge, brake and camera campaigns have touched recent model years.

The news that matters to Super Duty owners tends to be practical: what changes for the new model year, whether the latest Power Stroke and gas V8 engines are holding up, how the towing ratings compare with Ram and GM, and which recall letters are about to arrive in the mailbox. Long-term tests and high-mileage owner reports carry real weight here, and so, occasionally, do the custom builds and stretched F-450 limousines that push the price of a work truck into supercar territory.

Ford's heavy hitters, the F-250, F-350 and F-450 that tow fifth-wheels, haul horse trailers and run on Power Stroke diesel or Godzilla V8 grunt.
