About Camaro

The Chevrolet Camaro was born in the late 1960s as GM's answer to the Ford Mustang, and its rivalry with the pony car became one of the great storylines of American performance. The early Camaros, especially the SS, Z/28 and dealer-built specials like the Yenko and COPO cars, are now prized collector cars. The second generation of the 1970s, the IROC-Z of the 1980s and the fourth generation of the 1990s all have their own devoted followings.

Chevrolet dropped the Camaro in the early 2000s, but it returned in 2010 with retro styling and a starring role in the Transformers films, and the sixth generation, launched for 2016, was praised as the best-handling Camaro ever. Track-focused models such as the ZL1 and 1LE delivered serious performance. But sales lagged behind the Mustang and the Dodge Challenger, and critics complained about poor visibility, a cramped interior and a tiny trunk that made it hard to live with every day.

Chevrolet ended Camaro production after the 2024 model year, closing a chapter that stretched across more than five decades and six generations of muscle-car rivalry. GM has hinted that the name could return in some form, but no successor has been confirmed, and speculation runs from a four-door sports sedan to an electric coupe. Meanwhile the Mustang stands as the last traditional pony car standing, and the Camaro's legacy lives on in the classic car market, where restored and original examples continue to command attention.

For now the Camaro story is told mostly in the past tense, through classic Camaro auctions, restorations, racing history and the occasional low-mileage final-year car that shows up for sale. Recall notices and reliability reports remain relevant to the many owners still enjoying their cars, and every rumor of a revival, or comment from a GM executive, sends enthusiasts into a frenzy. Few retired nameplates generate this much conversation, which says a great deal about how much the Camaro still matters.

Camaro

Chevy's pony car, born in 1967 to fight the Mustang, retired after 2024, and still chasing headlines through SS, Z/28, COPO and Yenko classics.
