About Blazer
Few nameplates have changed shape as often as the Chevrolet Blazer. The original K5 Blazer of the late 1960s was a full-size, two-door off-roader with a removable top, a rival to the Ford Bronco and a favorite of hunters and beachgoers. Later came the compact S-10 Blazer, one of the vehicles that helped launch the SUV boom, and then the TrailBlazer. The Blazer name vanished for a time before Chevrolet revived it, causing some purists to grumble about what had become of their beloved off-roader.
The modern Blazer arrived for 2019 as a two-row midsize crossover with styling clearly inspired by the Camaro. It was a car-based SUV designed for style and comfort rather than the trail. The Blazer EV followed, an electric crossover that offered a sporty SS version and even a police edition. Its launch was marked by early software problems that led to a temporary stop-sale, but reviewers have since praised its range, space and driving dynamics, while complaining about its charging experience.
The gas-powered Blazer competes with the Honda Passport, Nissan Murano, Hyundai Santa Fe and other two-row midsize crossovers, while the Blazer EV takes on the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. The future of the gas-powered model has been the subject of reports as GM reshapes its crossover lineup, and both versions are built in Mexico. Meanwhile the Blazer EV has found an audience among buyers who want space and style at a competitive price.
Blazer watchers have a lot to follow: EV updates and charging improvements, comparison tests, model-year changes and pricing moves, plus recall notices and owner stories. The SS performance version brings its own drama, while police versions add a law-enforcement angle. Most interesting of all is the continuing debate over what this much-traveled nameplate should be, a question that has followed the Blazer from its K5 off-road origins to its current electric form, and one that classic Blazer fans are always happy to reopen.
Blazer
From the K5 off-roader to a Camaro-faced crossover and the electric Blazer EV and EV SS, a nameplate that has reinvented itself more than once.
