About Bolt

The Chevrolet Bolt was one of the first affordable electric cars with real range, arriving for the 2017 model year and beating the Tesla Model 3 to market. It offered more than 200 miles on a charge at a price within reach of many families, and it quickly became a favorite among EV enthusiasts who valued practicality over glamour. The Bolt EUV, a slightly larger crossover version, joined later and broadened its appeal.

The Bolt's story took a dramatic turn when battery defects led to fires, prompting a recall that covered every Bolt built and required battery replacements. GM eventually resolved the issue, and sales rebounded as the Bolt became one of the least expensive EVs on the market. Production ended in 2023, leaving a gap in Chevrolet's lineup, but the company soon announced that the Bolt would return with new technology and a lower price, a rare second act for an electric car.

The second-generation Bolt arrived as a 2027 model, built in Kansas with a lithium iron phosphate battery, a Tesla-style charging port and a starting price under $30,000. Reports indicate GM has cut planned production, and some reviewers have questioned how long the revived model will last. It competes with the Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV and other affordable electric options, and its fate will reveal a great deal about demand for inexpensive EVs in America.

The Bolt's second act will be judged on more than its spec sheet. Reviews and pricing changes, production news and recall notices, battery updates and charging improvements all matter, as does the broader question of whether automakers can make money on inexpensive EVs as tax credits change. Owner stories and long-term tests will show how the new Bolt holds up, and whether it can recapture the loyal following its predecessor built before the battery recall.
