About IS
The Lexus IS was born as Toyota's answer to the BMW 3 Series, and it has spent its life trying to prove that a Japanese sport sedan could be every bit as fun to drive. The first generation, sold in Japan as the Toyota Altezza, arrived in America for the 2001 model year as the IS 300, with a straight-six engine, rear-wheel drive and a chronograph-style gauge cluster. It was not a sales giant, but enthusiasts loved it, and clean examples are now modern classics.
The second generation added the V8-powered IS F, Lexus's first proper performance sedan, and the third generation, introduced for 2014 and heavily refreshed for 2021, carried the line into the current era. That refresh brought sharper styling and the IS 500 F Sport Performance, with a 5.0-liter V8 that critics adored for its sound and character. Despite its charm, the IS is showing its age compared with newer rivals, particularly inside the cabin, and its future has been the subject of much speculation.
The IS competes with the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, Genesis G70, Acura TLX and Cadillac CT4, as well as electric rivals such as the Tesla Model 3. Limited editions and special colors have kept it fresh for its loyal following. Coverage includes model-year updates, special editions, reviews, recalls and news on whether a successor, perhaps electrified, is on the way to keep the rear-drive Lexus sedan alive.
