About Twingo

The original Twingo of 1993 was one of the most charming small cars ever made: a one-box shape, a smiling face with frog-like headlamps, a sliding rear bench and a cabin full of bright colors and clever storage. It was designed under Patrick le Quement and became a fashion statement as much as a cheap car, remaining in production for well over a decade. A more conventional second generation followed in 2007, and the third, launched in 2014, moved the engine to the back and shared its platform with the Smart ForFour.

The rear-engined Twingo was entertaining and nimble, with a famously tight turning circle, and an electric version was added late in its life. The new Twingo E-Tech Electric revives the shape and spirit of the 1993 car as a fully electric city car developed in a very short time, with help from Renault's engineering team in China, and aimed at a price low enough to bring EVs within reach of more European drivers. Renault has given it a cheeky character, even nicknaming the launch cars after the original's frog face.

The new Twingo competes with the Citroen e-C3, Fiat Grande Panda, Dacia Spring, Hyundai Inster, Leapmotor T03, BYD Dolphin Surf and Volkswagen's coming small EVs, and its price will decide how many it sells. It shares much of its engineering with the Renault 5, which sits above it in size. Coverage collects reveals, reviews, pricing, accessories such as its glass-roof option, recalls and sales, plus nostalgic looks back at the original.
