About Megane

The Megane name arrived in 1995 to replace the Renault 19, and it quickly became one of Renault's most important cars. The first generation spawned the Megane Scenic, the compact minivan that created a new segment and won European Car of the Year for 1997. The second, launched in 2002, was famous for its bustle-backed rear, a bold design that some loved and many mocked, and it won European Car of the Year for 2003. Across its generations the Megane was also sold as a sedan, coupe, convertible and wagon.

For enthusiasts, the Megane meant Renault Sport. The Megane RS models of the 2000s and 2010s were among the sharpest front-drive hot hatches ever made, trading lap records at the Nurburgring with Honda's Civic Type R. The combustion-powered Megane hatch was retired in most of Europe as Renault pivoted to electric power, and the badge moved to the Megane E-Tech Electric, launched in 2022 as a crossover-style hatch on a dedicated electric platform shared with Nissan. It has been praised for its interior, its Google-based infotainment and its ride.

The Megane E-Tech has since been updated with a new look and more range, and sells against the Volkswagen ID.3, Cupra Born, Kia EV3, MG4, BYD Dolphin, Peugeot E-308 and Tesla Model 3. In Renault's lineup it sits alongside the Scenic, Austral and smaller Renault 5. Coverage collects reviews, price cuts and range updates, recalls, retrospectives on the RS legends and debates about whether the old hatchback should have been retired at all.
