About Scenic

Few cars changed European family life like the Renault Scenic. When the Megane Scenic arrived in 1996, it packed minivan practicality into a hatchback footprint, with a tall roof, separate rear seats and storage bins everywhere, and it sold so well that every rival rushed to copy it. It won European Car of the Year for 1997, and Renault's Espace was suddenly not the only family car people associated with the brand. Later Scenic and Grand Scenic generations kept the formula alive through the 2000s and 2010s.

As buyers abandoned minivans for crossovers, Renault reinvented the name. The Scenic E-Tech Electric, launched in 2024, is a fully electric family crossover built on the same dedicated platform as the Megane E-Tech, with a long-range battery option, a spacious cabin and a large glass roof that can turn opaque at the press of a button. It was named European Car of the Year for 2024. Reviewers praise its space, comfort, efficiency and thoughtful details, while noting it is pricier than the minivans it replaced.

The Scenic competes with the Skoda Enyaq, Volkswagen ID.4, Kia EV5 and EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Peugeot E-3008, Tesla Model Y and a growing number of Chinese family EVs. Renault has since updated it with more range at the same price. Coverage follows reviews, range and pricing changes, recalls, sales results and the way an old minivan name became a modern electric family car. It is also a useful barometer for the broader question facing European carmakers: whether a well-made, sensibly priced electric family car can hold its own as cheaper Chinese competition arrives.
