About Tata Motors

Tata Motors is part of the sprawling Tata Group, and for many Indians it is the closest thing the country has to a national carmaker. It spent decades building trucks and buses before entering passenger cars, and in 1998 it launched the Indica, celebrated as the first car designed and built entirely in India. Then came the headline-grabbing Nano, sold as the world's cheapest car, and in 2008 the purchase of Jaguar Land Rover from Ford, an acquisition that astonished the British establishment and later transformed Tata's fortunes.

The modern passenger-car lineup is built around safety, design and electrification. The Nexon became the first Indian-made car to earn a five-star rating from Global NCAP, and a string of Tata models has since earned top crash-test scores. The Punch micro-SUV, the Tiago hatchback, the Harrier and Safari SUVs, the Curvv coupe-SUV and the revived Sierra cover most of the market. Tata dominated India's early EV boom with electric versions of the Nexon, Tiago and Punch, though critics have pointed to uneven quality and service in its past.

Tata Motors has gone through a major restructuring that separated its passenger vehicle business, including Jaguar Land Rover and its EV arm, from the commercial vehicle side. Its rivals are Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Mahindra at home, and increasingly MG, Kia, Toyota and Chinese newcomers. Tata has deepened ties with Stellantis, including a plan to share its Sierra platform for a new Jeep, and it builds trucks and buses for India and export markets alike.

Coverage follows a company with many moving parts: monthly sales and festive discounts, new launches and special editions, EV battery-rental schemes, plant expansions, crash ratings, recalls and reviews, plus Jaguar Land Rover news and the electric trucks Tata supplies to fleet operators. The company's quarterly results and its share price are closely watched in Mumbai, and its product plans shape the whole Indian market. When Tata launches a new SUV or cuts EV prices, rivals from Maruti Suzuki to Mahindra tend to respond within weeks.
