About Harrier and Safari
The Harrier was Tata's boldest bid for the premium SUV market. Launched in 2019, it rode on a platform derived from Land Rover architecture, a dividend of Tata's ownership of Jaguar Land Rover, and wore an aggressive, split-headlamp face that turned heads. Two years later the Safari name returned, revived from Tata's tough 1990s SUV, on a stretched three-row version of the Harrier. Together they gave Tata credible rivals to the Mahindra XUV700, Hyundai Alcazar and MG Hector, a segment where it had long struggled.
For years both were sold only with a two-liter turbo-diesel sourced from Fiat's engine family, a choice critics questioned in an era of petrol and hybrid alternatives. Later updates brought a sharper design, larger screens, more safety equipment and, eventually, a turbo-petrol engine. The Harrier EV, built on a dedicated electric architecture with optional dual-motor all-wheel drive, has become Tata's electric flagship. Reviewers have praised their road presence, comfort and safety while criticizing ride quality and some interior details.
The Harrier competes with the Mahindra XUV700, MG Hector, Jeep Compass and Hyundai Creta, while the Safari faces the Mahindra XUV700 and Scorpio N, Hyundai Alcazar, Kia Carens and Toyota Innova Hycross. The Harrier EV squares off against Mahindra's electric SUVs, the BYD Atto 3 and Hyundai's EVs. Tata regularly adds dark-themed and special editions, such as the matte-black Stealth versions, to keep showroom interest high between bigger updates. The pair also serve as the brand's halo models for families who want something larger than a Nexon.
Coverage follows price revisions, special editions, discounts and festive offers, real-world fuel economy and range tests, comparison tests against Mahindra and Hyundai rivals, recalls and reviews. The Safari EV has been widely expected, and its timing and specifications are a recurring topic, along with how Tata's two biggest SUVs fit beside the revived Sierra in an increasingly crowded lineup. With Mahindra, Hyundai and Toyota all fighting hard for the same buyers, both models will need regular attention to stay near the top of their class.
