About Baleno
The Baleno name first appeared in India on a 1990s sedan, but it was the premium hatchback launched in 2015 that made it a household name. Sold through Maruti's then-new Nexa showrooms, it offered more space, more features and a more upscale feel than the Swift, and it quickly became one of India's best-selling cars. It also became one of the first made-in-India Suzukis exported to Japan, a significant milestone for the country's car industry and for the trust Suzuki placed in its Indian factories.
The second-generation Baleno, launched in 2022, added a head-up display, a 360-degree camera, a larger touchscreen and more safety features, along with a refined petrol engine, an automated manual gearbox and a CNG option. Toyota sells a twin called the Glanza. Reviewers have praised its space, efficiency and features, while criticizing a soft ride, a modest safety rating in older crash tests and a cabin that feels less special than some rivals. A facelift has been widely expected, with spy shots and leaks feeding speculation.
The Baleno competes with the Hyundai i20, Tata Altroz, Toyota Glanza and, increasingly, compact crossovers such as Maruti's own Fronx, which is built on the same platform. It is exported to Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, and remains one of Maruti's most important models in volume terms, even as buyers shift toward SUVs. Its blend of space, economy and equipment has made it a common choice for young professionals buying their first new car, as well as for families stepping up from an entry hatchback, and its resale values have held up well over the years.
Coverage follows monthly sales, price changes, festive discounts, new variants, facelift rumors and spy shots, reviews and comparisons, recalls and safety updates. For many Indian buyers the Baleno is the sensible upgrade from an entry hatchback, and its fortunes are a good indicator of whether the premium hatchback can survive the SUV wave that has swept through India's showrooms. So far the Baleno has held its ground better than most, but each new crossover launch makes the question a little more pointed, and the coming facelift will be judged on how well it answers.
