About Scania
Scania is the truck brand Europe's drivers talk about at the truck stop with a certain reverence. Based in Sodertalje, Sweden, and dating to the late nineteenth century, it has built a reputation for comfortable cabs, modular engineering and, above all, its big V8 diesels, which have given generations of long-haul drivers both effortless pulling power and bragging rights. Its griffin badge appears on trucks, buses, coaches and industrial engines around the world.
Scania's modular system, in which a relatively small set of components can be combined into an enormous variety of trucks, is studied as a model of manufacturing efficiency. The company became part of the Volkswagen Group and today sits within Traton, alongside MAN, International and Volkswagen Truck and Bus. Its trucks are especially strong in Europe, Latin America and Australia, and its custom-painted show trucks are a subculture of their own.
The current push is electrification. Scania sells battery-electric trucks for distribution and increasingly for long haul, with longer-range models launched in Europe, and it has begun producing trucks in China to serve that market and speed the shift. Its buses and coaches are changing too, with a new-generation Touring coach and plug-in hybrid city buses. Coverage here includes truck and coach launches, electric-truck news, fleet orders, factory plans, special editions and the business results of one of Europe's most respected heavy-vehicle makers.
