About Virtus

The Virtus is proof that the sedan is not dead everywhere. Volkswagen first used the name in Brazil in 2018 for a Polo-based sedan, and in 2022 it launched an India-specific Virtus built near Pune on the localized MQB A0 IN platform it shares with the Taigun SUV. It is the closest thing Volkswagen offers to a traditional three-box family car in markets where a trunk still means status, and where a sedan is often the car a family buys to mark that it has arrived.

The Indian Virtus won fans with its handsome proportions, a large boot and turbocharged petrol engines, including a 1.5-liter unit in the sportier GT versions that makes it one of the more entertaining sedans in its class. Like the Taigun, it earned a five-star Global NCAP rating, a major selling point in a market where safety awareness is rising quickly. Critics point to a cabin that feels plain in places and rear-seat space that trails the roomiest rivals.

Its competition includes the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Maruti Ciaz and its corporate twin, the Skoda Slavia. The segment has shrunk as Indian buyers flock to compact SUVs, yet the Virtus has held its place near the top of it, helped by enthusiasts who appreciate a low, well-damped car on a fast highway. It has also become an export product, shipped from India to other markets. The coverage follows special editions, price changes, safety ratings and sales as Volkswagen tests how long the midsize sedan can thrive in an SUV-mad world.

Virtus

Volkswagen's midsize sedan for India and Latin America, a sporty, five-star-rated alternative to the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Skoda Slavia.
