About ID. Buzz
The ID. Buzz is the car Volkswagen teased for more than two decades before finally building it. A modern, battery-powered descendant of the Type 2 Microbus, the bus of surfers, hippies and road-tripping families, it was revealed in production form in 2022 and immediately became the most smile-inducing vehicle in the company's lineup. The two-tone paint, the giant VW logo on the nose and the bright, airy cabin are pure nostalgia, but underneath it is a thoroughly modern electric van on the MEB platform.
Europe got the regular-wheelbase passenger van and a Cargo version that has won fleet awards, while North America received a longer three-row model with a bigger battery. Reviewers love the space, the visibility and the sheer charm; critics balk at the high price, modest range for the money and handling that feels exactly like a tall van. Some testers who expected a gimmick came away genuinely won over, and few vehicles at any price draw as many waves from strangers.
In the United States the story has been bumpy. Volkswagen has paused the ID. Buzz and pushed its return back by a year, to the 2028 model year, and reports say a next-generation version on newer underpinnings will aim for a lower price and more tech. This page follows the Buzz through those delays, recalls, special editions, fleet sales and the long-running question of whether nostalgia can sell an expensive electric van.
