About Tank

The Tank brand exists because GWM noticed something about China's newly affluent drivers: plenty of them wanted a Land Cruiser, a G-Class or a Wrangler, and very few could get one at a sensible price. Launched in 2021 from a model first shown under the Wey badge, the Tank 300 answered with a boxy, retro-tinged body, a ladder frame, low-range gearing and locking differentials, all for roughly the price of a mainstream crossover. It sold strongly from day one and turned Tank into a brand in its own right.

The range climbed in size and ambition. The Tank 500 is a three-row, family-sized SUV pitched against the Toyota Prado and Land Cruiser, and the Tank 700 is a big, luxurious flagship. Powertrains run from turbo petrol and diesel engines to conventional hybrids and the Hi4-T plug-in hybrid, which puts an electric motor between the engine and transmission for strong low-speed torque and quiet electric running on the trail. Reviewers tend to admire the capability and value while noting weight, thirst and ride quality that can betray the hardware underneath.

Tank has become a key part of GWM's push into Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, South Africa, Malaysia and Pakistan, markets that understand off-road vehicles better than most. Its rivals are the Toyota Prado and Fortuner, Ford Everest, Jeep Wrangler, Isuzu MU-X and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, along with fresh Chinese challengers from Jetour, BYD's Fangchengbao and Chery's iCaur. Like the rest of GWM, Tank is not sold in the United States.

For buyers, the questions are long-term ones that only time answers: how these trucks hold up after years of corrugated roads, how dealer support compares with Toyota's vast network, and how resale values behave. The coverage brings first drives of new hybrid versions, regional launches and bookings, used-buyer guides, model updates, discontinuations and recalls, plus the occasional odd story, including one Tank 500 in Pakistan that drove clean through a showroom window, a mishap no brochure ever mentions.
