About Ora

Ora was GWM's answer to a simple question: what if electric cars were allowed to be charming? Launched in 2018, the brand chose round headlights, curvy bodywork and feline names, Good Cat, Ballet Cat and Lightning Cat among them, that drew affectionate comparisons with the Volkswagen Beetle, the Mini and even classic Porsches. The approach earned Ora a cult following among younger buyers, especially women, in China, and gave GWM an easy-to-love calling card as it took its EVs abroad.

The Good Cat, sold in some markets as the Ora 03 or simply the GWM Ora, was the brand's first big export, a well-equipped electric hatchback that arrived in Britain, Europe, Australia, Thailand and Malaysia. The Ora 07 sedan, a smooth, coupe-roofed rival to the Tesla Model 3 and XPeng P7, raised the brand's ambitions. More recently the Ora 5 broke with tradition by offering petrol and hybrid power alongside a fully electric version, a pragmatic move for markets where charging remains patchy. Critics have liked the comfort and cabins while questioning efficiency and pricing against newer rivals.

Ora's place in GWM has shifted as the group consolidates brands and pushes Haval into electrified models, and in some export markets the cars are now sold simply under the GWM badge. Its competitors include the BYD Dolphin, MG4, Volkswagen ID.3, Leapmotor's small hatchbacks and the many other compact electric cars flooding out of China. Price cuts, renamings and relaunches have been common as the segment grows ever more crowded, and the brand has had to fight hard to stay visible.

Coverage tracks launches in South Africa, Southeast Asia and Australia, sporty GT and power-boosted trims, head-to-head price comparisons, first drives and recalls, along with the brand's evolving role inside the GWM family. The deeper question is whether personality alone can carry a small electric brand once the novelty fades and buyers start comparing range, charging speed and price per mile. Ora's answer so far has been to add powertrains, sharpen prices and keep the cat names coming.
