About Shark
The Shark 6 is BYD's first pickup truck and one of its boldest moves. Revealed in 2024 in Mexico, it is a dual-cab ute with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain that uses a gasoline engine mainly as a generator, with electric motors driving all four wheels. That gives it strong acceleration, real electric-only range for daily driving and lower fuel bills than diesel rivals, all wrapped in a body sized to compete with the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux. It found a particularly eager audience in Australia, the world's great ute market.
Early reviews praised its power, comfort and equipment, while noting that it is heavy and has a lower towing rating than the toughest diesel utes, which matters to tradespeople and caravanners, and that its handling off-road is more competent than heroic. A large recall in Australia, affecting tens of thousands of vehicles, along with advice to owners about the spare wheel, kept it in the headlines. A sportier Shark 6 Performance version has arrived in some markets, and newer model years have brought premium trims.
The Shark competes with the Ford Ranger PHEV, the Toyota HiLux, the GWM Cannon Alpha, the Kia Tasman and a growing number of Chinese plug-in hybrid utes. Its success has encouraged other Chinese brands to target the segment. Look here for reviews, recalls, sales, pricing and the latest on BYD's pickup ambitions. The Shark is a test of whether electrified power can win over the most conservative buyers in the car world, the ones who judge a truck by what it can haul down a corrugated road on a hot afternoon.
