The Seal is the car that announced BYD's ambitions to drivers who care about handling. Launched in China in 2022 as part of the Ocean series, it is a sleek electric sedan aimed squarely at the Tesla Model 3, built on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 with the company's cell-to-body construction, in which the Blade battery pack forms part of the car's structure. Sharp styling by a design team led by former Audi designer Wolfgang Egger and a well-finished cabin helped convince skeptics that a BYD could be desirable as well as affordable.
It comes with a single rear motor or a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup with serious acceleration, and reviewers have praised its refinement, comfort and range, while noting that its handling, though competent, does not quite match the best of its rivals and that its software can be fussy. The Seal name has since spread across a family of models, including plug-in hybrid sedans and wagons and an SUV sold in some markets as the Seal U, and BYD has previewed newer Seal-badged sedans for China.
In Europe, Australia, Asia and Latin America it competes with the Tesla Model 3, the Hyundai Ioniq 6, the Polestar 2 and the BMW i4, often at a sharp price. It is one of the cars that made Western carmakers take BYD seriously.
