About Tuning and Restomods

Some people buy a car and drive it as the factory intended. Others see it as a starting point. Tuning and customization turn mass-produced machines into personal statements, whether that means a lowered hatchback with a bigger turbo, a lifted pickup on oversized tires or a vintage body hiding a modern drivetrain. This page follows the modified-car world, from garage builds to the specialist shops creating six- and seven-figure restomods.

Hot rodders in postwar Southern California set the template, stripping and souping up old Fords for dry-lake racing and street cruising. The aftermarket industry grew around them, eventually organizing its great annual showcase at the SEMA Show. In the 1990s and 2000s, Japanese performance cars, import drag racing and films such as The Fast and the Furious made tuning a global youth culture, while European enthusiasts built their own scenes around Volkswagens and BMWs. Every generation found its canvas.

The restomod has become the scene's most visible luxury. Builders such as Singer, with its reimagined air-cooled Porsche 911s, and a wave of specialists working on Broncos, Land Rovers, E-Types and Mustangs blend classic looks with modern brakes, suspension, air conditioning and reliability, often at prices above new supercars. Meanwhile, tuners face tougher emissions enforcement over defeat devices and modified exhausts, and electric conversions and crate EV motors have opened a new and contentious frontier.

Expect build features, shop profiles, show highlights, parts and engine-swap news, regulatory fights over modifications and debate over what counts as a tasteful upgrade. In this corner of the hobby, there is no stock answer, which is rather the point. From modest bolt-on upgrades to ground-up builds that take years to finish, the work celebrated here reflects a simple conviction shared by every tuner and restorer: that a car can always be made a little faster, sharper or more personal.
